Will New Refrigerant Laws Impact My Air Conditioning?

Change is on the horizon. HVAC manufacturers are always improving what technology is available with a particular eye to making systems more efficient. This decreases environmental impact and reduces the amount that you have to pay for the energy needed to cool and heat your home. And as the available technologies change, laws change, too.

There’s a law that will be going into effect at the start of 2025 which will have an impact on HVAC manufacturers and thus on anyone who owns or purchases an air conditioner. It’s a specific portion of the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act. How will this new law affect your access to air conditioning? What should you do about it? Here are the facts. If you have more questions about your best options regarding the 2025 refrigerant mandate in Birmingham, AL, we’re happy to help you navigate these changes.

What Is the New Refrigerant Mandate?

The portion of this law going into effect in January 2025 has to do with phasing out the use of a specific refrigerant. All air conditioning and heat pump systems use refrigerant, a chemical that absorbs heat from one place and releases it in another as it flows through the coils of the system. The refrigerant which has been most common for the last decade has been R-410A.

Now, new refrigerants are available, particularly R-454B and R-32. They have a lower environmental impact than R-410A and operate more efficiently. The change that’s occurring in January is that manufacturers will no longer produce new air conditioners that use this older refrigerant.

Will My Air Conditioner Be Illegal?

Don’t worry—this law does not affect existing air conditioners. You’ll still be able to operate your AC or heat pump system that functions on R-410A without any legal concerns. However, since this refrigerant won’t be needed for manufacturing new units, less and less of it will be made. This may affect your ability to get your system refilled with refrigerant if it experiences a leak at any point.

Should I Buy a New Air Conditioner?

While it’s not necessary to get a new AC unit in order to comply with the law, it would be sensible to upgrade an old or failing air conditioner before January. That’s because this new manufacturing mandate will almost definitely increase production costs, and there may also be supply chain interruptions. Getting your replacement done sooner rather than later could save you money and hassle.

Are There Benefits?

The legislation surrounding HVAC systems and energy use in general is intended to benefit you. First, it’s better for the environment, so you’ll have a healthier planet. Next, reducing your energy use by complying with new regulations will mean spending less on your energy bills. Finally, there are tax incentives available for people who upgrade to new, efficient systems.
