What? No Ducts? A Ductless Heating FAQ

Most new homes in our area have been built with ducts since the 1970s. That’s when central air conditioning became commonplace. But older homes would not have had ductwork in their original construction. And even in homes built with ducts, the passage of time or specific damage may have led to ductwork that is in terrible condition.

Is it possible to have AC and heating throughout your home for even comfort without any ductwork? Yes! A ductless system can provide not just air conditioning but also heat, with no need for ducts at all. How does this work? We’ve got answers to your questions about ductless heating in Pelham, AL.

What Is a Ductless System?

Ductless systems are also called mini splits. That’s because when the refrigerant comes into your home from the outdoor unit, it splits into separate lines. Each line goes to its own mini-system or air handler, rather than all the refrigerant going to a single, large unit as it does with central air conditioning. The cooling (or heating) occurs right at the air handler, as the air exits the vent.

How Do Ductless Systems Provide Heating?

A heat pump makes it so your ductless mini split can heat your home as well as cool it. This system is essentially a reversible air conditioner. Instead of just carrying heat out, the flow of refrigerant can be switched to carry heat in. And in climates where the temperature rarely drops below freezing, they can provide all the heat you need, all winter long.

How Does It Work in Cold Weather?

It might seem impossible for flowing refrigerant to carry heat into your home when the temperature is, say, 45°F outside. The trick is, you don’t need the outdoor air to be warmer than the indoor air. You only need it to be warmer than the refrigerant. And since refrigerant is super-cooled, this system works even when it’s quite chilly outside.

Is It More Efficient?

Yes! While a heat pump works as an efficient air conditioner, when it comes to heating, it is truly unbelievable. Generating heat requires tons of energy. But moving it from one place to another requires much less. Your heating bill will drop significantly if you choose to use a heat pump.

Ductless systems are more efficient than using ducts, too. For one thing, most ducts in American homes are leaky enough that 30% of the heated and cooled air is wasted anyway. Then, there’s more thermal loss as the air has to travel a long distance through ducts before getting to the vents. Finally, each air handler has its own thermostat, allowing you to fine-tune your temperature and only use the heat you need.

What Care Do Ductless Systems Need?

In most ways, a ductless heat pump is just like an air conditioner. However, because a heat pump is providing year-round service, it does require a little extra help. Make sure to have maintenance done twice a year. This is especially critical with ductless systems so that each air handler will stay clean and effective at providing ductless heating.
