It’s not an easy question to answer, that much is certain. In many cases, there is a gray area between that of repair and replacement because the cost of replacing a single component may rival that of investing in a new system, or your system may be irreparable. But while there’s no clear general answer, there are some factors to keep in mind as you figure out whether to repair or replace.
How Old Is the System?
An air conditioner in Alabama is not going to last as long as one in the northeast. Considering how much we run our air conditioners here, it’s hardly surprising that may have difficulty lasting over 10 or 12 years. And if your system is this age or even older, and a problem arises, then it may be time to look ahead to the future. Putting more and more money into an older system could be a financial mistake.
How Efficient Is It?
Another consideration is the system’s energy efficiency. If your AC is old and has a relatively low SEER rating, then you could stand to save significant money over the next 10 years with a new system. One of our technicians will be able to breakdown the long-term cost differential. Then again, if your system is not yet quite ready to retire, there are plenty of other upgrades you can opt for, such as a new thermostat or zone control.
If you do decide to replace, you may want to install a high-efficiency AC, or even a ductless heat pump, which will save you serious bucks in the long-term.
