Beware These Heat Pump Problems

You’re going to be relying on your heat pump more and more often over the coming weeks and months, which means more wear and tear on the system. That equals more chances for problems to occur. If you want to keep your heat pump in good condition, you need to catch any and all problems as early as possible. Let’s take a look at some common heat pump problems, and what you should do about them.

Clogged Air Filter

The air filter sits in the air return duct, shielding the heat pump from any dust or other debris that might interfere with the operation of the system. The part does its job well. However, it has no way of getting rid of the debris that it collects. This causes the filter to become clogged if it isn’t cleaned out often enough. If the air filter becomes clogged, it could cause the heat pump to ice over and create all kinds of problems. You should have your air filter cleaned out every few months, in order to avoid this problem.

Refrigerant Leaks

Without refrigerant, the heat pump would not actually be able to heat or cool your home. Refrigerant is recycled back and forth between liquid and gaseous states during operation. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will drain the system of the fluid it needs to operate. This will cause the output of the system to decline over time, eventually resulting in a total system breakdown. If you see fluid dripping from your heat pump, call for repairs as soon as possible.
