How Zone Control can Make Your Heating System More Efficient

Heating season is almost here, and there a lot of things you need to do to make sure that your home is in the best possible shape for the cold months. Heating maintenance is a big part of it, but it’s not the only part. There are a couple different ways that you can improve your home’s climate control system. Zone control is one of those ways. Let’s take a look at zone control, and how it can make your heating system more efficient.

Zone Control

A zone control system is designed to split up your home’s ducts into a series of different zones. It does this through a set of dampers, which are like large valves that can open or close to control the flow of air through the ducts. Each zone created by this system has its own thermostat installed inside it. When the thermostat detects a need for heating, it turns on the heating system and opens up the appropriate dampers. This method of operating allows a centralized forced air heating system to condition only the parts of the home that specifically require it.

Advantages of Zone Control

One of the issues with centralized forced air systems, like furnaces or heat pumps, is that they can only condition all of the house, or none of it. This kind of blanket approach creates hot and cold spots throughout the house, wastes a lot of energy on rooms that don’t need it, and generally makes your home less comfortable. Zone control gives you a much finer level of control over your indoor climate than you otherwise would have. This improves your heating system’s energy efficiency, and makes your home more comfortable.
