What’s Wrong With My Heat Pump?

It’s been downright chilly here in Birmingham these last couple of weeks, so it’s no wonder you’re concerned about your faulty heater! Just how in the world are you supposed to keep yourself warm and toasty with a heat pump that isn’t heating as it should?

There are a number of reasons why your heat pump might not be working properly, and below, we have listed some of them for you. All you have to do is keep reading to find out more (and yes, remember to call our team when you need heating repair in Birmingham, AL.)

So, What’s Going On?

Like we mentioned above, there are a number of reasons why your heat pump might not be working properly. These include:

A Clogged Air Filter

One of the first things that your HVAC technician will check for is a clogged air filter. When the filter becomes too clogged with dirt and debris, it restricts the amount of air that enters the heat pump to be heated. Air filters need to be replaced more than once a year. In fact, it is recommended that air filters are changed every 1-3 months.

Thermostat Issues

Sometimes the issue doesn’t actually lie within the heat pump itself. A faulty thermostat can be the reason why you’re not receiving the heat you want. If the thermostat is miscalibrated, the heat pump won’t run long enough to maintain the level of heat your home needs. Also, if the connection between the thermostat and the pump is broken, it is impossible to change the system over to heating mode.

Leaking Refrigerant

Heat pumps need a specific amount of refrigerant to function properly, even if it is in heating mode! During the winter, the refrigerant absorbs the heat in the surrounding air so it can heat your home. If there is a leak, then you’ll probably notice lukewarm air.

Broken Reversing Valve

The reversing valve is the mechanism that allows your heat pump to switch from cooling mode to heating mode and vice versa. If the valve becomes stuck, your system won’t be able to switch modes. Fortunately, a certified HVAC technician has the training and equipment to correctly replace the valve.
