What Is the New Refrigerant Mandate?
The portion of this law going into effect in January 2025 has to do with phasing out the use of a specific refrigerant. All air conditioning and heat pump systems use refrigerant, a chemical that absorbs heat from one place and releases it in another as it flows through the coils of the system. The refrigerant which has been most common for the last decade has been R-410A.
Now, new refrigerants are available, particularly R-454B and R-32. They have a lower environmental impact than R-410A and operate more efficiently. The change that’s occurring in January is that manufacturers will no longer produce new air conditioners that use this older refrigerant.
Will My Air Conditioner Be Illegal?
Don’t worry—this law does not affect existing air conditioners. You’ll still be able to operate your AC or heat pump system that functions on R-410A without any legal concerns. However, since this refrigerant won’t be needed for manufacturing new units, less and less of it will be made.
